Not only is the Sun the central star of the Solar System, it is also a perfect source of renewable energy. Its location brings infinite energetical opportunities which give numerous advantages. Thanks to the fact that sunshine comes to Earth life has appeared in here; and taking into consideration the exhaustion of conventional resources, solar energy becomes an unlimited alternative.

Since ancient times, people noticed the Sun's potential. Ancient inventors discovered a method involving certain arrangement of windows, walls and „air-conditioning” holes that enabled automatic heating of a building. Solar energy was stored to heat buildings in the night. Nowadays, there is also a quest for an effective as well as efficient method to get enough energy by little costs so that its generation would be worthwile. Solar thermal collectors provide their users with such features. Having absorbed solar radiation, they heat flowing water up to 40 – 65 Celsius degrees. Such a system can be applied not only by personal users, but also in e.g. agroculture.

There are also other ways of converting sun rays into energy than the one forementioned. By photovoltaic conversion energy can also be generated from solar radiation. It is conducted by the means of photovoltaic cells which turn radiation directly into electic energy. To do it, the inventors used a p-n junction, in which voltage – difference between potentials - is created by moves of photons. Solar cells are made from single crystal sillicon and they are used mainly in industry.

Another method is photochemical conversion in which solar energy is turned into chemical energy. So far, this way is not fully worked-out as its efficiently reaches barely 19 – 34 per cent. It takes place in living organisms and is known under the name of photosyntesis. Scientists created photochemical cells that dissociate water thanks to solar light.

Furthermore, in high temperatures and by using thermic dissolution of steam to hydrogen and oxygen – known as water thermal decomposition – takes place. High temperature is gained by using certain mirrors that concentrate sun rays. Solar updraft power can be also applied. It is a very high chimney in which energy of air flow is turned into electric energy thanks to a wind turbine connected to a generator.

Solar power industry has been becoming for the last few years an increasingly popular source of energy. Not only is it expanding when it comes to industrial use, but also individual user can benefit from ecological energy. Both technological development and financial aid programs helped to enlarge the number of people who use this type of energy. It can't be forgotten that ecological awareness, promoted by politics, is also increasing. Leaps of prices of conventional energy has also a big impact on deciding for other methods of generating energy. Thanks to subventions that help to apply solar energy devices, industrial appliances are becoming more and more popular in countries such as Germany, Czech Republic, France, Greece, Italy. Thanks to financial aid, there has been a rapid growth of photovoltaic usage in industry. Since 2000, manufacturing of solar cells is rising by about 40 per cent annually.

A few basic advantages of solar energy can be deducted from this piece of information. It is beyond any doubt that sun rays are avalaible anywhere and virtually in any amounts. If used wisely, there is no negative impact on the enviroment. They do not emit any harmful substances. Collectors can be applied easily and almost everywhere so energy absorbed can be turned directly into other forms of energy. After further analysis, though, it can't be missed that to produce photovoltaic cells toxic elements such as cadmium, arsenic, selenium, tellurium are used. Moreover, such devices need vast amounts of space, but by using greates swaths of land more energy can be generated.

Solar thermal collectors have been composed into our landscape for years, and their energy provides people with ecological power. Worldwide growing demand for energy makes it essential for us to wisely anad fully use all the alternative methods of creating it.

People are forever trying to find new sources of renewable energy, so it isn’t surprising that they are especially interested in water and its versatility.
